How to Prepare to Attend a Home Show

The New River Valley Homebuilders Association is holding the NRV Home Expo on Saturday April 9 from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM and Sunday April 10 from 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM at the Christiansburg Rec Center.

If you’re planning a remodel, an addition, or a new home, spend some time reviewing your project priorities.

Before you go to the show, ask yourself: What are the top three things that this project will achieve for you and your family? This will help you share your needs with any contractor you approach. If you are remodeling your kitchen, for example, priorities might include:

  • Updates that will allow you to entertain guests more easily at home.

  • More streamlined and functional workspace, with less clutter and more room to stow small appliances.

  • Better flow of the home’s center, which might include adding a study nook, a wine fridge, or a walk-in pantry.

Review our online guide

Our website (www.nrvhomeexpo.com) lists all the attending exhibitors. You can use this information to identify the services you need. Review the list and look at some of the exhibitors’ websites and reviews to get a feel for the projects they’ve completed. This will help you to focus on the contractors that best fit your needs.

Bring photos or a video of your ideas

Photos and videos will help you start the conversation and give exhibitors a sense of your project. A reputable company will not give you a firm quote or estimate, but you can talk about your specific needs and determine whether you should meet with them later. You can also use this opportunity to ask them how they carry out projects, if they work well with kids and pets, and if they are able to work around family members who work from home.

One last thing: as you speak with people from design, construction, or trade firms, make note of who you enjoyed speaking with. Most people choose to live on-site in their home during the construction process, so you’ll likely be living and working closely with whoever you choose to hire for the duration of the project. Under these conditions, clear communication and coordination are paramount. Whatever you end up deciding to do, home shows are a fun way to learn about the ins and outs of construction. Enjoy the show and best of luck on your project!
